Here’s a hashtag — #DitchThePower100. Billboard’s bad habit of ranking people against each other is in very poor taste, especially when the list is always the same old white dudes. There’s no doubt the top three are the most powerful people in music, but do we really need to rank the next 97 people below them using an opaque and biased system? Is this how we think of each other, as a number on a list, moving up and down an arbitrary ranking? It’s 2016 and time to put the rulers away. Let’s focus on inclusiveness, diversity and showing a little self-awareness. I respectfully encourage the people on this list to use their “power” to pressure Billboard to ditch this tacky tradition.
