Nelson Hidalgo took tailgating to a whole new level last weekend outside of a Mets game at Citi Field in Queens. The 47-year-old pulled up to 127th Street and 35th Avenue, opened the back doors of his van and exposed 80 different speakers. Hidalgo, with a Coors Light in hand, began blasting music at 10:45pm and quickly found himself with a crowd of onlookers.
His impressive collection of speakers, which cost $20,000 according to Hidalgo, were so loud that the Mets bullpen was one of the 911 callers complaining about the noise. When the police arrived to arrest Hidalgo he allegedly told them, “I know it is illegal, but it’s the weekend.” This doesn’t seem to be the first run-in that Hidalgo has had with law enforcement. Though he has no prior record of arrest, the speaker enthusiast claims that he is usually given a ticket or just asked to leave by police. Unfortunately this time, Hidalgo was charged with second-degree criminal nuisance, general noise prohibition, disorderly conduct and obstructing the driver’s view.
