We did it! Yesterday we announced that Amplify Media had been acquired by Billboard, closing the chapter on a deal that had been in place for more than a year and caps off a dream-come-true ending for the Amplify family.

Also in the Amplify family is writer Taylor Mims, who now joins the staff of Billboard, as well as our accountant Francine Armstrong who will stay to help manage Amplify, as well as our trusty mascot and one-time CFO Bandit the Dog.

When I started Amplify four years ago, I never thought it was even remotely plausible that one day I would work at Billboard, let alone sell them my company. We launched our paid subscription tier in September 2014, about six weeks after publishing our first issue of The Real and I was extremely nervous that no one would sign up.

I remember sending an email blast out to our small list of readers asking folks to sign up. After pressing send, I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and as I looked in the mirror, I thought “what am I going to do if no one signs up?” I then walked back to my computer, and within the first 10 minutes, more than ten people had signed up.  I had just made $1,000. By the end of the day, more than 50 people had become members and I realized that Amplify was no longer a passion project — it was a viable business. And like that, my life completely changed.

On Jan. 18 2017, the same day my son Wes was born, I accepted a position at Billboard and my life completely changed again. Today I feel so blessed to live just blocks away from Amplify’s office in Long Beach and to have this position at the world’s biggest music media platform.
